Subscription Offer

We wish to draw the reader's attention to Shenpen Osel's new subscription/donation policy. In the past it has been our policy to provide, or at least try to provide, three issues of Shenpen Osel per year to everyone who has made a donation by way of subscribing to this journal. Keeping to this schedule has sometimes been difficult. Our staff is made up entirely of volunteers, and we have wanted always to provide the highest quality editing of which we are capable. We have also wanted to avoid presenting anything but the straight and authentic dharma. And of course Kagyu Shenpen Osel Choling has had other activities that have made demands on the time of various members of Shenpen Osel's staff. For these reasons, meeting the schedule has at times been difficult and stressful.

For a time, before deciding to take a year's sabbatical/retreat, the editor had considered closing the magazine, especially since books like Ocean of Definitive Meaning were now being published beautifully in book form by Zhyisil Chokyi Ghatsal, and other avenues for presenting these great teachings were opening up. But during this sabbatical, the editor was able to take several one month retreats and a couple of shorter retreats, which restored his enthusiasm for this journal and his sense of its continued value. It also provided the inspiration for discovering a meddle way between continuing the previous subscription policy under stressful conditions and closing the magazine altogether. From this time forward, this middle way shall be Shenpen Osel's subscription by donation policy.

Any subscription/donation to Shenpen Osel shall entitle the donor to three issues of Shenpen Osel whenever they appear. If they appear in one year, that will be wonderful! If it requires a year and a half or even two years for them to appear, that will also just have to be wonderful!

We also will continue to reserve the right to designate issues as double issues when the logic of publication of the teachings causes us to extend the length of the magazine.

Also, inasmuch as it would amount to much unnecessary work and mailing expense for our volunteer staff to return small amounts of money to donors in the case of the magazine's unlikely imminent but nonetheless eventual closing - the end of all gathering is dispersion; the end of all building is ruin; the end of all meeting is parting; the end of all birth is death - donations to Shenpen Osel in such an eventuality will not be returned but donated to some worthy dharma activity.
